I know you've heard this kind of comment before, but-- this thought of getting the shaft parallel to my right forearm-- has been a complete game-changer for me. I'm now crushing all my clubs, getting compression and distance. Today I hit one drive 252 and hit 3W 272! Seriously, 272 with 3W! (with the wind.) I still pull shots a little, but not much. I have great confidence in my ball striking now. I'm 69 yrs old. Thanks, Clay!

16 kun oldin

By taking a stronger grip, you can mitigate the amount of lead wrist bowing needed to square the face, but the short answer is no, you cannot accomplish this by grip only. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

Best explanation where the shaft needs to be on the downswing and why. Period. Best drill to "feel" the difference between steep and shallow. Period. This is a game changer, but will take (me at least) a lot of work to rewire movement patterns. On my first trip to the range, I had several of Clay's "feels amazing" moments. Those good shots felt different than any of the 10 millions balls I've hit in my life. Any suggestions on how to go about making this stick? For now, I guess I'm going to do the drill several times a day and hit balls about half speed until it feels natural. Thanks Clay.

By rolling your club face over on downswing, will it promote a hook?

i have the same problem with instruction videos. I may be doing each of these things, but not consciously, so the question is more why is this happening. Not sure changing a non-conscious action with a conscious one is really an answer - much better to understand why (balance, gravity, weight of the club head etc.). That way the change would have more chance to hold up under pressure too. Best video I have found so far though!

The only reason we can't swing on one plane is the the right elbow. When it bends the hands get lifted by the length of the right forearm but the elbow stays on the swing plane. The club must come back to rejoin this elbow plane prior to impact.

Can someone answer a question. How long did it take for you to make contact with irons most often? I’ve been playing 8 months so I realize I’m a beginner but I’ve played nearly everyday non stop and still only contact 1 out of 5 irons. The other 4 roll across the ground about 50 yards. It’s worse off a tee than the ground. I don’t want to give up but months of work with no progress is frustrating. Even my best shots I’ve ever hit are 40 percent shorter and 75 percent lower than everyone I play with

Oy oldin
chex313
chex313

@Shane Deel It sounds like you have a lot of tension, try to relax as much as you can , get your grip correct and think of your arms as noodles. You will generate a lot more speed if you relax your muscles and just let the club swing it self. Have you taken at least one lesson?

I can only answer for myself, but I started out playing as a kid with my grandma. It took me years to create any consistency with striking the ball. I'm still working on this decades later (there have been a lot of years in between where I rarely played). Keep at it and keep track of what's going on. Record your swings and see if you can figure out ways to make it better by comparing it to others. Create games and try to make them harder each time you practice and don't give up. Best of luck! I feel like your explanation of turning that clubface is natural bc I’m a hockey player; but so many instructors seem to say NOT to let the scoring lines turn over through and past impact; I’m much more inclined to naturally do what you are advocating for here and isn’t the turning the face over like that a power producer? I’m wondering if you can comment here or in future videos about: difference many instruction advocates for keeping the face in line with the spine angle through and past impact vs. what you are showing here where you are saying turn that face over all the way and don’t hold it off.

I drop my trail hand into a position like I'm holding a waiter's tray at the top of the swing, before I start down and then tuck that trail elbow into my torso. That golf ball sound at the beginning scared the shit outta me. Mr Clay, question. I understand what you have to do to square the clubface through impact..what are your thoughts on rate of closure then? It seems that having to rotate your hands so much through impact would cause your rate of closure to be pretty high which, for us amateur golfers creates a very difficult swing/shot to reproduce over and over again.

Oy oldin
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard

Haha! 😂 Sorry about that...If the shallowing of the club and wrist position is correct, it takes a lot of the timing out of the swing. Basically, you get in the right position and then turn through the ball. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor

The release you explained is a specific feel for your game. Seems like there’s a couple schools of thought, between square release, like Jordan Spieth, or more of a roll release, which is what Clay is talking about and can be seen in classic Tiger’s swing. Would agree there’s a trend to minimize face rotation, but giving up potential in club speed. As long as the hands are leading at impact, it minimizes excessive face rotation. If the club head catches up to the hands before impact, that’s where we get into the inconsistent strikes

Check out his videos on ‘the move’. There’s a few feels he discusses, such as feeling trail elbow tuck in, lead hand toward the sky, or trail hand turning a doorknob. There’s also a check if you draw a line from the ball through the trail elbow at address from the DTL view, keep the shaft and club head under it, from trail arm parallel in the downswing to impact

Oy oldin
Paul O'Neil
Paul O'Neil

I would argue for amateurs, late rolling of the wrist is not the best option. When Pro swings are analyzed on the GEARS system, the biggest difference between Pro & AMs, is how quickly, from the very Top of the Backswing, that Pros put Squaring / Twisting Torque on the Handle and Square the Face almost immediately, compared to AMs that never even get it square at all. The Tennis Drill, done immediately at the top, to get the club squared early, then allows all the other sources of power (handle forward, etc) to be accessed. Square Early -> Rotate Hard

Can't argue with that. Thanks for sharing! Nate | TSG Instructor

Oy oldin
Wes Charlton
Wes Charlton

Far less timing involved than when trying square the club when “flipping”. He has a video on this very topic, think it’s referred as ‘zone of pure contact’. Having the hands in front of the club head at impact allows for a ball first strike on a descending blow with irons/hybrids. Even if we’re not synced up just perfectly, with that descending strike and taking a divot after the ball, it gives a better chance of more solid contact in the intended direction. Key is keeping your rotation with your body going, at least as I understand it
