The Only Driver Lesson You'll Ever Need

Hey Clay love the videos, I avg about 115mph and smash factor about 1.4 to 1.45 but I get the hooks any videos on getting rid of my hook? From watching I feel I need to hit the range and do the extreme both ways to find the sweet spot but any quick tips on getting rid of my hook would be solid! I avg about 285 on driver but usually play my 4 iron because my driver accuracy is so inconsistent. I also play a lot of softball so always feel that's a factor.

I enjoy that you talked about closing the club head face at address. You said to hit the outside of the ball. Hit the outside while coming from the inside to create the draw. The downswing plane is different from the backswing plane. I have a blister on top of my left big toe knuckle. I tape it so it doesn’t get red and sensitive. I think if I keep my toes off the ground I can roll to the outside of my left foot and get slightly greater club head speed. Friday at Dyker Beach GC in Brooklyn, NYC I hit a 294 yard drive from the white tees. The 7th hole is a par 5 482 yards (491-482). I’m a very flexible 70 year old guy who ran 14 marathons in the 1990’s & 2000’s. After a 28 year break I’m back very much in the game. I’ve written 20,000 words on the golf swing thanks in large measure to the great videos of YouTube. Imagining the golf swing is a meditative art form. I had a chance to reach a green that many golfers don’t get a chance to do. I didn’t hit the green but I feel it will happen. Be Great Be Good and Be Lucky

I like what you are demonstrating but, my biggest fear is that I panic and rush my swing without having just a little lean before ball contact. It’s a mental block I have and can’t seem to shake it. When my driving is dead on, I usually hit a good straight shot down the middle of the fairway however before my round is finished I start screwing up my drives. It’s a mental thing with me and I know you are going to say practice more until I get it right.

If I'm using an Iron off the box and my ball is teed up, am I using the same concept as a driver swing because my by ball is off the ground?

Oy oldin
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard

No, the idea here is to get a perfect lie on the ground. The ball should barely be teed above the ground. You can try teeing it up by your lead foot with a 3-wood though to get a higher launch and more distance if you're using that off of the tee box. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

I've watched this video many times and understand everything you are saying and showing. I feel like I can emulate these motions fairly well, but my result always seems to end with a slice. Any help appreciated.

@Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard Thanks, I've done some more practice since posting this comment, and have successfully been able to begin rotating my wrist easily to prevent the slice. Now I have to learn to moderate this as I am now hooking the ball - I understand this is considered progress... :)

Easily the most valuable (and maybe overlooked?) part of this video is at 4:14... Generally, people would become MUCH better ball strikers if they would practice more thinking about the trail-hand palm facing toward the ground through impact. This idea was a defining moment in making my ball striking more consistent and a ton more solid. If you're going to practice this though, don't give up when you hook a few lol! You need to also teach your body to keep turning! Thanks Clay for the video(s)! Awesome work as always!

I’m really struggling with the driver. Some days it works out ok, but really not confident at all in the tee box. Two main things I KNOW are happening, 9 out of 10 shots are heel and high on face, the 10th is sometimes center but high on the face, and the ball slices, and outside to in ... I had a few trips out in a row where everything worked well, the driver was straight or fading which is great, but then something happens and I go to push right and slices ... so I have an idea of what is wrong but it doesn’t make sense to me at how drastic the changes are from round to round ...

2 oy oldin
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard
Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard

It's hard to say without seeing a swing, but my guess is you're coming over the top. You can download an app like V1 and record your swing down the line. Draw a line from the club's hosel through your elbow plane and see where the downswing plane resides. Above the line and you're too steep. If so, I would work on hitting the ball out to the right. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

Clay, I'm a big fan of your videos, they have helped my game for sure, but I must disagree with your thoughts on hitting the ball high on the face for more distance. While I agree hitting it higher on the face will give better results than hitting it low on the face, the center of the face is the optimal strike location that will give the best results in a proper swing.

Great detailed instruction. I've been binge watching your videos all throughout this pandemic and winter to get tips on better driver play. Made it to the range for the first time this season a week ago and implemented the bowed/hinged left wrist at impact (snap not slap) and gripping the club with the right hand after being in the tilt position. I hit the straightest and longest drives since I started playing over 15 years ago. Always struggled with a slice and the couple lessons I took didn't correct it. I even took the draw bias out of my driver head. Thank you very much and look forward to more practice to solidify these into habit.
